Look at the front page of any Cape Town newspaper, on the day after the Carnival troupes’ march through the city center (which is usually held on die Tweede Nuwe Jaar, the Second New Year, January 2nd) and you'll see lots of photos of grinning, clowning, dancing minstrels. I’ve produced plenty of those pictures myself. (Click here to see a few.)
But as I was saying in yesterday's post, there is also a serious side to the Carnival, a side that involves hard work and discipline. (Click here to see a few photos showing these things.)
Below are a few more of the many portraits that I made in 2008 of members of the Pennsylvania Crooning Minstrels. In them, you’ll see a little clowning and a lot of pride and self-respect.
