Most non-musicians probably don’t realize that a lot of great music is made during rehearsals. Over the last couple of days, I’ve been lucky enough to hear Terence Blanchard, the Grammy award-winning composer and jazz trumpeter, and the members of the University of Virginia jazz band prepare for tonight’s concert. More than once Blanchard or a band member has caught fire during a solo, producing something absolutely magical. The concert is going to be terrific. (More info, here.) I made the photos below during rehearsals on Thursday and Friday.
I should mention that the guy on the right is John D'earth, the jazz band's director and an amazing jazz trumpter is his own right.
Wonderful coverage, John! These are great photos of Terrence and the jazz ensemble fully engaged...

Great shots, Professor Mason-- these are a great contrast to the photos I was able to snag at the concert. Terence was such an inspiring musician to photograph, wasn't he?

No doubt about it. A great musician and a fine human being.
