It was great to see Antron Brown, one of my favorite drivers, win the Top Fuel class, yesterday, at the National Hot Rod Association’s [NHRA] Midwest Nationals, at Gateway International Raceway, just outside St. Louis. This was Brown’s twentieth NHRA career victory, 16 in Pro Stock Motorcycle and four in Top Fuel. It’s not unusual for drivers to change classes during their careers. But moving from bikes to Top Fuel dragsters? Almost unheard of. Brown’s making it work, that's for sure. He’s already won twice this season, and he’s the points leader in his class. That’s him in the photo below. (And, yes, he’s about to go racing in a Stock Car.)
I took this photo last year at Bristol Motor Speedway, in Bristol, Tennessee, just before Brown and several other professional drag racers tried their hand a circle-track racing. It was a publicity stunt that was sponsored by the NHRA and the Speedway. The racers took if pretty seriously, however, and Brown did well, considering it was his first time behind the wheel of a Stock Car. He placed second, behind Top Fuel driver Doug Kalitta, who is an experienced circle-track racer.
