The University of Virginia's Jazz Ensemble played a terrific concert, last Saturday night. The rehearsals weren't half bad, either. I was lucky enough to be there for all of it, documenting the event for the university's music department.

The music that the band played was its usual eclectic and very beautiful mix -- some Ellington, some funk from Tom Scott, a Spanish madrigal from the 13th century, a Cole Porter/Gordon Jenkins mash-up.... Don't ask me how, but it worked. In my experience, it always does (and I've been listening to various iterations of this band for over 15 years).

Several special guests, including six different singers, joined the band for the concert.

She must have been listening, because she really nailed it.
