Consider this the Cape Town International Jazz Festival edition of Funky Friday. That's because, today, we're celebrating the Wayne Shorter, one of the most significant sax players and composers of his generation, who will appear at the festival on both March 25th and 26th.
Let's start with Shorter's composition "Footprints," a true jazz standards. Just about everybody has recorded it, at some time or another. And, yes, it's funky as heck.
By the time he released "Footprints," Shorter had put together one of the finest quartets is jazz history: Herbie Hancock, on piano, Reggie Workman, bass, and Joe Chambers, drums. That was 1966.
It's now 2011, and Shorter's still playing with some of the best musicians around. Here's a video of him playing with the group he'll bring to Cape Town: Danilo Perez, piano, John Patitucci, bass, and Brian Blade, drums. The guys are half his age, and they're magnificent. Enjoy!
