The International Hot Rod Association held one of its Sportman Nationals drag races at Richmond Dragway, last Sunday. There will be seven of these events this season, at tracks scattered all over the country. They're a big deal for sportsman (that is, non-professional) racers. A win at one of these races guarantees the driver a place in the Tournament of Champions at the IHRA's season-ending World Finals in October. So it's not surprising that racers showed up from as far away as Florida and Ontario, Canada. I was there to cover the event for Drag Racing Online. Below are some of my favorite outakes from Sunday. (My report, with many more photos, should be up on DRO within a few days.) Update: My story and photos from Richmond are now available here at DRO.
That's my friend Michelle Furr, performing a burnout in her gorgeous blue Camaro. She placed second in a very tough field in the Hot Rod division.

Yes, that's a Porsche 944. Drag racing.
Officals from drag racing sanctioning bodies always treat photographers with great respect.
