The new issue of Kronos is out, and I'm in it.
Forgive the shameless self-promotion. Kronos is a wonderfully innovative historical journal, and the articles in this issue, which is devoted to documentary photography in South Africa, are terrific. The editors, Diana Wylie and Andrew Bank, have done a spectacular job. I'm lucky to be a part of it.
My contribution is a discussion a two important photo-essays about the early days of apartheid that Margaret Bourke-White published in Life magazine in 1950. I blogged about these essays a few months ago. You can read about them (and see many of Bourke-White's photos -- published and unpublished), here and here.

Update: This issue is now online, here. And you can read my article, "Picturing the Beloved Country: Margaret Bourke-White, Life Magazine, and South Africa, 1949-50," here.
