Black Sunday is the annual drag racing extravaganza that the United Black Drag Racers Association (UBDRA) has been hosting for over a decade. Every September, hundreds of race cars and thousands of fans descend on Gateway International Raceway (just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis) for three days of speed that begin on Friday and end on Sunday. It’s the largest drag racing event hosted by an African-American organization.
Nobody should think that Black Sunday is just for African- Americans. As you’ll see in this photos, which I made at the race in 2006 and 2007, everyone is welcome. Racers and fans come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. And everybody has fun.
Black Sunday 2009 would have been the 12th edition of the race. Unfortunately, it was rained out. (As you’ll see in my photos, the weather has a history of being uncooperative.) Everyone is already looking forward to next year. Number 13 is sure to be lucky.
